    • Identification and access management refers to the process of ensuring that only authorized users can access privileged information. The term typically refers to the access of network-based information and employs user names and passwords for security purposes.


    • Many private organizations employ their own identification and access management techniques. Universities, for example, usually have a complex identification and access management system governing access to student records, journal databases and other information available only to university staff and students.


    • The U.S. federal government has established a committee called Identity, Credential and Access Management that seeks to establish universal regulations governing access to sensitive federal information. Its goal is to provide Americans with better access to government information while respecting privacy and security concerns.
