We're constantly told that eating healthy, a good diet and exercise are the keys to longevity and fighting disease. But, what we often don't know is How to be healthy, what a healthy lifestyle truly consists of and what we should be doing to be the healthiest we can be. Sure, we know to €eat your vegetables€, but what vegetables exactly will give us the most bang for our buck? Do we have to go with organic food to make a difference? All of these are very real questions that deserve an answer.

The first answer to How to be healthy is to make the best choices the majority of the time. It doesn't mean depriving yourself or never enjoying good foods again. It means that if you have the choice, most of the time, pick the healthy option. If you're eating fast food, the majority of the time, you will want to choose the grilled chicken sandwich and salad option instead of the cheeseburger and fry option. Sometimes, it's fine to choose the cheeseburger, but certainly not the majority of the time. The majority of the time, dessert options should be fruit or low sugar based, but sometimes, it's fine to indulge in the chocolate lava cake.

To have a healthy lifestyle, you want to have more fresh, green vegetables on your plate than you do meat or grain products. That doesn't mean you can't have a portion of the macaroni and cheese, but you should also have green beans, asparagus and broccolli too. If you choose today to endulge in the higher fat, higher sugar items, make today the one you also exercise a bit more than usual to compensate. Just like eating, exercise doesn't have to be an all or nothing proposition. While you should strive to exercise 30 minutes a day, every day. There will be days you're not feeling like doing it. That's OK too, but try not to make those days the same ones that you over-indulge in homemade chocolate cake.

Living a healthy lifestyle means thinking before you eat and establishing a balance and trade-off system with yourself. It means exercising and eating foods that you enjoy but that are also healthy for your body too.
