Use a notebook to write down everything that the baby consumes and the time. Include the type of formula and the number of ounces, or if breastfeeding, the length of the feeding. Write down any cereal or baby food as well. This will be a starting point so that parents can look back and notice a pattern based on milk consumption.

Write down any health concerns and the time they start. This includes anything that concerns a parent, including gas bubbles, diarrhea, vomiting, rashes, hives, or wheezing. Even general irritability not related to fatigue should be written down.

Put a star by consistent symptoms that show up after each feeding. According to Healthy Children in "Milk Allergy," the most severe symptoms usually display themselves about 30 minutes after eating, but some may take several hours. Look for any patterns that show a consistent symptom that emerges each time milk is consumed.

If a pattern develops, change eating habits to exclude milk products. For formula-fed babies switch over to a soy or hypoallergenic formula. A breastfeeding mother will need to cut dairy out of her diet.

Continue tracking feeding and health symptoms for two weeks in the notebook and look back to see if the original health problems or fussiness have improved. Make an appointment with the baby's pediatrician to make sure he is aware of the possible milk sensitivity and to see if there are any other possible causes.
