New R&B/Soul Albums: April 2009

It looks like April 2009's going to be a pretty weak month for new R&B and Soul music. There's only seven noteworthy albums coming out during the month and of those seven, only three feature all-new, previously unreleased material. The other four are either albums of remakes or old material repackaged. It could be result of the recession taking it's toll on the music industry. Anyway, the three all-new albums coming out are the sophomore release by Day26; the third album by Soul singer Urban Mystic; and an eight-song EP by singer-producer Bosko. 1. Forever in a Day, Day26

The second album by the only one of Diddy's "Making The Band" groups that's still together is set to drop April 14 via Bad Boy/Atlantic Records. Among the producers contributing to the project are Diddy, Mario Winans, Bryan-Michael Cox, Jermaine Dupri, Allstar the Big Beat Maker and Tim & Bob.

2. GR III: Old School 2 Nu Skool, Urban Mystic

The third release in Urban Mystic's Ghetto Revelations series of albums drops April 28 via SoBe Entertainment. Among the producers who worked on tracks are KayGee (of Naughty By Nature fame), Mike City and Scott Storch.

3. The Good Life Movement, Bosko

Bosko (not to be confused with the cartoon character of the same name) is a Soul singer and producer best known for his vocals on songs by rappers like Kanye West, Big Boi (of OutKast) and others. He says this about his sound: "I'm a musician and I pride myself on creating memorable melodies. The Good Life Movement fuses Hip-Hop with Soul, hard-hitting tracks with live instrumentation. It's lyrically progressive, about honesty in relationships and living life to the fullest." His new EP will be in stores April 21 via Net King LLC/BoskoLive.com.

4. Change Is Now: Renewing America's Promise (CD/DVD), Various Artists

This Barack Obama-inspired compilation, due out April 28, contains a music CD featuring various artists, plus a DVD of Obama speeches.

5. Great American Soulbook, Tower of Power

This veteran, 10-member Funk/Jazz/Soul outfit is releasing an album of remakes on April 7 to coincide with the band's 41st anniversary. Tracks include classic songs by Aretha Franklin, Billy Paul and a four song James Brown tribute. Guest performers include Joss Stone.
